Out and about..

Saturday, February 17th, 2007

Whilst travelling up to North Allerton today to collect some new half leather seats for my Peugeot 205, I passed a tropical fish shop called Aquatic Finatic situated on the A168 – Thirsk Road, just outside North Allerton. A little bit too far for a regular visit from York, but definately worth a stop, and browse on the way back, (engine and gearbox needed a cooldown, after raylle-ing around North Yorkshire Dales to the back of beyond to collect my seats!).

A very interesting tropical fish shop, friendly staff, interesting fish, and plenty of ‘Ls’ in stock. A nice discount of ten percent on many fish, if you purchase more than 5. I needed to stock up on Zebra Danios to keep tanks “cycling” so I purchase twenty, and some Hikari Algae Wafers, it’s good to see these back in stock at last.

P.S. The music on the Aquatic Finatic website sounds like, a man on a keyboard at the local social club!

October 2006 Update

Tuesday, October 17th, 2006

The foggy Autumn weather is upon us, we’ve been in the house almost two months, I’ve been busy plumbing in the washing machine and tumble dryer in the garage (burnt out two pneumatic SDS hammer drills!), cutting the lawn – that’s a job with an electric lawn mover, cutting the hedge (still not finished that job with my new Hedgers!, I’ll take a picture of them, thanks to Christopher at Groundscaper for the recommendation), boarding out one of the attics, discovering we had BATS, visit from the BAT Squad, to authorise works in the attic, planting bulbs in the garden, you get the general idea, been a little too busy to take pictures and update the blog.

After a recommendation, I got another roofing company to visit and inspect the roof and chimney stack – and their professional opinion – unless it leaks leave well alone – oh and take some pictures, and compare them in six months time, after the winter so here they are

Roof 14
Front view of The House including the Yellow Peril! (is that racist?) If you look carefully, the house was extended 30 years ago, so part of the roof is only 30 years old (above the garage and bedroom). This roof is felt-lined, different tiles have been used to “join” the roofs together. So there is a “ridge” at the join. The other roof is original, and is not felt lined, “daylight” can be seen in the attic space, it’s very draughty and dirty, where the grain has blown in off the fields, and is full of cobwebs, the Bats are only in the new part of the loft, as they hate draughts and spiders cobwebs.

Roof 1
Front elevation view of roof and chimney stack. Some bulging is evident in the stack, this could be caused by the iron-stays used to secure the pots, these have corroded, and have started to expand, causing the brickwork to bulge. The rear of the stack is worse, as this receives most of the weather. The stack my need rebuilding in the future, after consulation with my neighbour.

Reason for lack of posts..

Wednesday, July 12th, 2006

The reason for the lack of posts in the last few months, is on the 11 July 2006, we completed on a new house. Since April 2006, I’ve been very busy with the purchase of a new house.

Yes, and that means the fish house will be moving, not the website, that can stay here, but the fish house will be moving here:- (Our House Blog!).

Andy’s New Fish House

Coincidence first Animal House and then UK Marines Ltd

Thursday, June 15th, 2006

Last August I reported that Aquatics Mail Order giant Animal House, Batley, West Yorkshire had closed down, various rumours exist as to why they closed their doors for the very last time.

Almost twelve months later, after discussions with an eBay seller, who was responsible for the disposal of several items from a tropical fish shop in Batley, I discovered that UK Marines Ltd had closed.

This is a picture of the display tank measuring 9`x2`6″x2`6″ which was sold on eBay, following the demise of UK Marines Ltd, Batley, West Yorkshire. Many years ago, this tank was stocked with marine fish, but more recently had large oscars and gouramis present.

I did some investigations, and spoke to Roy Meeke, he told me he has not been involved with UK Marines Ltd for at least three years. UK Marines Ltd, Company No.03809034 was incorporated in July 1999, the directors at that time were Lynn Day and Roy Meeke, the company was dissolved in May 2002. Therefore it should not have been trading as UK Marines Ltd in the last few years since May 2002!

UK Marines Ltd, never updated their website, or removed Roy Meeke’s name from it.

I’ve discovered some other irregularities with UK Marines Ltd, but more on that later. All this information is available in the public domain.

Did UK Marines Ltd close due to lack of trade in Batley, due to Animal House’s closure?

When Animal House closed, I posed this question to the owner Philip Day, on my reqular visit to UK Marines Ltd, who indiciated that it would not cause a problem, but over the last tweleve months, I noticed a deline in the stock and hardware in the store, and told they were “re-furbishing” the store, and then they were going to “relocate” to Huddersfield!

Good Luck Philip & Lynn, where ever you are…!

Blog is Back!

Tuesday, November 15th, 2005

The Hosting Company that hosts this website decided to move it to another server early this morning at 01:08 because of resource issues. They didn’t communicate this we me, and the first I spotted it when I was notified by Walter early this morning at 06:45. I checked the website and I had noticed that, it had moved to another server, but some embedded code in the blog, was preventing it from working correctly.

Thanks Walter for spotting it and letting me know!

Webcam code in side panel is playing up! Sorry for stupid test posts! I bet you only thought you saw these on Mailing lists and Usenet groups!

Platinum Angelfish Second Spawning Failed

Saturday, November 5th, 2005

Either the eggs were not fertilised or the pH of the water was wrong, all the eggs after 24 hours turned white, indicating they were not fertilised, this is unusual, I’ve not had problems with this before.

Sturisoma Aureum eggs are developing well. I’ve also now started culturing brine shrimp.

The webcams are becoming difficult to locate because of the PCs new postion in the fish house, and I also need to re-calibrate the temperature probes, because the temperatures are a little incorrect!

Angelfishcam is on trial

Sunday, October 30th, 2005

Angelfishcam webcam controller PC is back and fixed, but I just need to align the webcams correctly, and this is proving difficult at present, to stop the webcam falling into the fish tanks!

Midnight oil!

Sunday, October 30th, 2005

I’ve been burning the midnight oil well I do have an extra hour!, integrating the Angelfishcams into the main blog pages, the old Angelfishcam links are still there, but angelfishcams are now refreshed automatically on the left sidebar every thrity seconds. If you click an angelfishcam image, it will spawn (excuse the pun) a pop-up window displaying a larger angelfishcam image, which again is refreshed every 30 seconds.

I’m hoping to have the angelfishcams back on tomorrow evening, after I’ve finally rebuilt the webcam PC in the fish house.
