Openreach ONT and BBU Service !

Saturday, August 12th, 2023

I thought I would document this, as I could not find any photos, videos, pictures on the internet, of a complete “legacy” system, as Openreach only supply an ONT at present, no BBU, so you don’t have a larger box, which contains, ONT and BBU, and I found it difficult to remove the BBU, you need to push up and pull ! It does budge, it’s not screwed, e.g. you do not need to remove the entire box from wall and disturb the fibre!

It’s been five years now, since the FTTP (Fibre To The Premises) was installed, and during that time it has worked flawlessly with no issues.

But 2023, we’ve had a few issues and recently in the last week we’ve had two major outages, the first outage lasted 5 hours, which was an underground fault 1000m away, and Openreach just physically moved “the shire” onto another fibre in the  ground.

and then Friday just gone, off for 15 hours, whilst I suspect another fibre cable in the ground had failed.

So this has given me a moment to change the AA batteries in the BBU (battery back unit), which has had a failed RED light on for many years, and Openreach no longer supply/install or replace the batteries in these units, it’s Self Service!

So off to Amazon, to purchase 8 x AA Energiser rechargeable batteries, the specifications state any batteries > 2000mAh

Andysworld! comes home!

Thursday, July 25th, 2019

It’s been just a little over 10 years ago that I migrated Andysworld! and all my hosting to the US, with

BUT – 20 days ago, I was left with

  • No hosting.
  • No email for 4 days.

There was no explanation of when it would return. So I’ve voted with my feet, and brought it all back to the UK, where I’ve been hosting with Krystal.co.uk since 2004, in one shape or form, when they acquired PurpleCloud!! (in 2011).

This is JustHost.com strapline – “Professional Web Hosting from Just Host – JustHost”

All I can say is…Just****.com.

So since I’ve  moved it all back, there maybe some teething issues…

No more double NAT – removed Fritz! Box 3490, and now just use Ubiquiti Networks UniFi Security Gateway

Thursday, July 5th, 2018

Since I migrated from Eclipse Internet to Zen Internet, I signed up to a 12 month contract and Zen Internet sent me out a free Fritz! Box 3490 to connect to ADSL, because all the other junk, BT Home Hub3, Draytek Vigor, 2Wire  routers had all come to the end of their lives and I dumped them down the tip.

Fritz! Box 3490

Fritz! Box 3490

I also wanted to start new and fresh with a new ISP, and their supported router.

I’ve also been replacing networking and access points with Ubiquiti Networks equipment. Specifically the UniFi AP AC Pros. These are not the cheapest network gear to get your hands on, but performance, quality and enterprise kit in the home – it’s excellent – I cannot praise it enough – I’ve been trailing a single 2.4/5GHz access point for over 12 months.

I’ve also installed a UniFi Security Gateway – and for a while I was running “double NAT” with it connected to the Fritz! Box 3490, when I was running ADSL, with the switch to FTTP, some minor configuration changes to the Fritz! Box 3490, and it was connected to the ONT in the last couple of days, but I’ve now removed the  Fritz! Box 3490, and now connected the USG direct to the ONT, ready for it’s move at the weekend, and securing to the wall next to the ONT.

and my network latency has improved by 2ms!

Why don’t vendors @sainsburys ?@BootsUK ?@tileapptest test their Websites anymore!!!

Tuesday, November 7th, 2017

<RANT ON>

What is happening with the world, companies not testing websites anymore, but still wanting us to purchase ONLINE, in the last week, I’ve been having issues with

1. Sainsburys

Changed their system from usernames to use email addresses, only my email address is already registered, so website crapped out!

2. BootsUK

Checking out, causes this….

Boots Website Error

3, Tile App

When you add a product to your basket, the price increases by 10 GBP for no reason!

How on earth, users with little computing experience deal with the likes of these diddly donks I’ll never know! But to answer diddly donks customer support questions because they seem incable of understanding what I’m telling them!

I’ve tried clearing my cookies, I’ve tried multiple browsers, e.g. Internet Explorer, Edge, Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Opera. I’ve cleared my cache, I’ve tried multiple computers, I’ve tried different ISPs, I’ve changed my under crackers, I’ve had a good breakfast, YOUR WEBSITE still doesn’t WORK!

and nobody seems to care!

Oh, Boots fixed my issue, they deleted my account, and asked me to create a new one!!!!!!

You select:-

  1. File > New
  2. Blog Post > Create

  1. Select your Account (blog)

Why Einstein A Go Go ?

Thursday, August 20th, 2015

einsteinagogo-yellow-i-might-have-to-paint-that-on-m

A few have commented on twitter, what a fantastic handle, or why @einsteinagogo ?

my-movie-movie-maker-000169

so I’ll lift the lid on the secret…very few know the actual reference is to an eighties song (1981) by Landscape – “Einstein A Go Go” – “You Better Watch Out You Better Beware Albert said that E=mc2” – “Einstein A Go Go“! Landscape had hits with “Einstein A Go Go” and “Norman Bates” in the UK Pop Charts in the 80s.

I’ve always been a huge fan of Albert Einstein, and I thought @einstein (although my citizen band radio handle late 70s/early 80s) was to egocentric for twitter, although I do have a rather large head!

so @einsteinagogo it was, I think the first reference (einstein-a-go-go) of using it was on the VMware Community Forums in 2005!

Mike Laverick of VMware fame (from Nottingham, UK) spotted it quickly on the VMware Community Forums, and wrote “fan of Landscape” from an early posting in 2005.

Quotes by Albert Einstein

“If the bee disappeared off the surface of the globe, then man would have only four years of life left. No more bees, no more pollination, no more plants, no more animals, no more man.”

Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I’m not sure about the universe.

If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough.

I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones.

Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance you must keep moving.

Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better.

It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge.

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has its limits.

Information is not knowledge.

Great spirits have always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds.

So now you know!

Andy’s new gadget courtesy of VMware – A Kindle Fire

Monday, April 9th, 2012

On April 2nd, I blogged here about a mysterious parcel from VMware that arrived by FedEx.

The parcel contained an Amazon Kindle Fire, not available in the UK. To be released later this year. I’ve not done the Android experience, being strictly an Apple iOS, Microsoft Windows CE/Mobile, and Nokia nerd. So it will be interesting to checkout what Android 2.3 ‘Gingerbread’ has to offer, compared to Apple iOS 5.1.

The Amazon Kindle Fire is a Full Colour 7 inch, multi-touch display, tablet, with WiFi, web, movies, music, apps, games, reading & more, and it runs Android 2.3 ‘Gingerbread’.

VMware sent me the gift, as a Thank You for providing feedback in the My VMware Beta program.

Thank You VMware!
