Since I moved my website, I’ve been experiencing slow broadband ADSL issues, at first I thought it was performance with the new website, out of the frying pan and into the fire. But then I noticed that all websites were slow and on checking my Rx Sync speed on Monday, it was syncing at 428,000 (just under half a meg!). I’m not too sure, if the hot weather is affecting the connection, I know that my connection to the exchange is underground for the majority of the way, until it reaches the telegraph pole outside my house, and the “green box” is at the bottom of the hill, and occasionally becomes a drain for the water that runs down the hill. After reporting the problem to my ISP, they reset the line, so I’ve been monitoring the line statistics since. The Rx noise was over 50db, when the Rx sync was 428,000 bps Tuesday afternoon, all has been well over the last 24 hours, with an average Rx noise of 15db, and Rx sync of 2140000, but I’m just checking the stats now, and it’s dropped to Rx noise 9db and Rx sync 1344000 bps. Maybe it’s the cold weather tonight!

It would appear that something weird is happening, and the nameserver entries are “bouncing” between the old and new nameservers, the effect of this is, is sometimes you get the old, and sometimes you get the new website. This is out of my control because it’s to do with the DNS cache’s that exist in the Internet and also your computer! It should settle down after 48-72 hours. When the nameserver updates have propagated across the internet. I’ve posted this as a sticky, so you can see if you have reached the old or new website. It may help if you flush the DNS cache on your computer. If I’m talking techie jargon and you’ve switched off don’t worry.

All seems to have gone well, I think. Here’s the boring techie, nerdie stuff. I started the move this afternoon at 12.30pm by changing the IPSTAG from the existing registrar to new new one. This change happened immediately, and the IPSTAG was changed to the new registrar. In hindsight, I think it would have been better to change the DNS nameservers first to point to the new hosting server rather than after. There was a small issue, and just my luck, after I had changed the IPSTAG, I noticed that there was a strange error in the transfer to the new registrar, and this is why:
“Unfortunately the company Nominet, the governing body of all .uk domains is currently out of service and experiencing problems. We are waiting for their systems to come back up.”
At approx 5.00pm, I was able to complete the transfer successfully, and update the nameservers to point to the new hosting server. During this time, I started copying the blog software and database to the new hosting server (here).
At present, I’m still waiting for the nameservers to update. So at present the old hosting server is responding to andsyworld.org.uk requests.

I’m just about to change the IPSTAG on the domain andysworld.org.uk, so I can move the domain registration provider (registrar). This could take between 48-72 hours but when it does change, the website may disappear temporaily. So this may be my last post here at this provider!
But don’t worry we’ll be back!

Not happy with the current performance of the blog, and wanting to do more adventurous things with it, I’m considering moving the hosting of it, if I cannot get the performance issues fixed. There’s quite a bit of data to move from https://andysworld.org.uk, which has ended up here over the last five years. This is probably going to be a two step process, in changing the domain records and then moving the web hosting (actual data and blog!).
I don’t know how long this is going to take me to organise, so just giving you the heads up now, just in case one day https://andysworld.org.uk doesn’t respond in how it should (which is happening quite a bit at present with blank page responses!).
I’ll try and give you warning with one last post, before I shutdown and move!

I purchased two Pay As You Go 3 USB Modems a few months ago from Sainsbury’s reduced from £49.99 to £12! I thought they would come in handy if I needed to go mobile with my notebook. My Orange High-speed circuit-switched data (HSCSD) data card is a little slow these days. I can surf the internet with a speed of 14.4kbit/s or if I use two time slots (bonded) can achieve a blistering speed of 28.8kbit/s, this is over the GSM network.
3 USB Modem Huawei E220 `
The 3 (http//www.three.co.uk) USB Modem is manufactured by Huawei. The model number I’ve purchased is the Huawei E220 HSDPA USB Modem. This model is often called the ‘pebble’, because it resembles a pebble, and is a small ‘dongle’ type device which connects to your computer using a USB cable. Some folk may be put off by this model in favour of the newer “chewing-gum type sticks” modems available.
The issue I have is that 3’s Pay As You Go data tariff involves “topping up” with £10, but this does not roll over to the next month, if a portion remains unused, you need to top-up again. For £10 you are given a data allowance of 1GB. I don’t find this suitable for my use, I’m only going to use this device . occasionally. A much better tariff for me is the ASDA Mobile Pay As You Go Tariff, Calls – 8p per minute, Texts – 4p per text, Data – 20p per 1MB. ASDA mobile phone tariffs are a steal. But unfortunately, you cannot just use an ASDA SIM Card in a mobile phone which is locked to the other vendors network! I tried the ASDA SIM Card in the 3 USB Modem, and although it recognises the PIN number, it states “invalid SIM”. This is because the 3 USB Modem is SIM Locked to the 3 Network.
Luckily there are software programs that can over-ride this lock. I’ve used the following procedure to over-ride the lock in a 3 USB Modem (Huawei E220) and replace the 3 SIM Card with an ASDA SIM Card. Your mileage may vary, and I will not be held responsible if this procedure fails, and turns your 3 USB Modem into a brick (breaks it!).
- Remove SIM Card from USB Modem.
- Connect USB Modem to computer.
- Download DC-Unlocker Client v1.00.0267 from authors-site or here.
- Install the above software on your computer where you have installed the 3 USB Modem.
- Start the DC-Unlocker Client on your computer.
- Click Buy Credits. You’ll need to register with the DC-Unlocker website, and purchase 15 credits. (15 Euros) to unlock the E220.
- Input your username and password into the DC-Unlocker Client, it should verify your details and confirm your credits.
- Do not change any other settings. Make sure select manufacturers – Huawei datacards is selected, and select model is set to automatic.
- Click the Magnifying glass.
- With no SIM card installed the following will appear

Install the Mobile Partner Software from above.

After installation, and only after a successful installation connect the USB Modem.

Plug ‘N’ Pray should install new drivers for the USB Modem.

Start Mobile Partner and create a new Profile for ASDA, ASDA uses the Vodafone network, but doesn’t use the Vodafone APN!

Open Mobile Partner application, choose Tools – Options – Profile Management – Click New
-
Create a new profile. e.g. ASDA or Vodafone
-
Select APN – Static – APN name is asdamobiles.co.uk
-
Authentication – Access number – *99#
-
username and password – web/web.
-
You could create a Three Profile, details are APN – APN
3internet. Username and password – leave blank.
-
Hopefully you be able to click connect and use the Internet via ASDA mobile network.

I think the generic version of Mobile Partner is a much better application than the “noddy” 3 USB Modem application.

The above procedure may work with different providers.

I’ve seen the BBC have replaced BBC iPlayer Download Manager with BBC iPlayer Desktop which uses Adobe AIR and Flex technologies which will make use of Flash Media Rights Management Server (FMRMS) to DRM-protect content which is downloaded to the user’s desktop. I wonder if they’ve changed this because they were fed-up of people stripping out the DRM with Windows tools. I suppose Mac and Linux users will now be happy, that BBC iPlayer content is available to them, and folks that never liked the peer-to-peer Kontiki software can be removed – I think Sky and Channel 4 4oD service still need this technology.
The BBC still allow you to download Windows Media Player content at present, with DRM! (direct download from website only – not peer to peer)

New posts for the fish house blog can be located in the fish house category, and likewise with posts to the our house blog, can be located in house.
