My suspicions have been confirmed two out of the five Nannacara adoketa in the quarantine tank have paired-off and to my astonishment have started to spawn this evening. Male and female fish confirmed, as pedicted in earlier pictures posted here.

This is a young pair, and this is their first spawning, I’m not too sure how viable this spawning will be, with three other N.adoketa in the tank, plus a Bristlenose catfish, and the waters wrong, ph 8! But I wanted to get these pictures on the blog, quickly.

As I’ve been at home today, babysitting the fish-house due to the power outage, well looking after the petrol generator. I had some spare time on my hands to wash and clean the fish tanks I collected some weeks ago, these six 30x15x12 are due to go into the fish house, when the shelving arrives.
The fish-house was on generated electricity from 8.00am – 3.00pm today, and consumed 5 kWh (units) of electricity.

The petrol generators primed, I’ve got 40l of petrol, I’m ready for tomorrow’s power outage between 9.00am – 4.00pm.
I’m hoping for a warm day, so I can clean six new fish tanks outside on the lawn, otherwise it’s going to be an interesting day listening to the wind-up/solar powered radio. Maybe I’ll catch up on the last 12 months PFKs!

The Royal Tiger Shovelnose catfish Merodontotus tigrinus or Brachyplatystoma tigrinum has got to be the king of all Tropical catfish.
This fine specimen is owned by a fellow fishkeeper, unfortunately not by me. I’ve always wanted one!

I’m told he eats anything, but he’s feed on white bait,larger prawns,sliced trout,bloodworm and river shrimp

Another long day at the office, and then an hours drive across the Humber Bridge to Licolnshire. Broughton near Bigg, just outside Scunthorpe.
I visited a local fishkeeper, who is shutting down his fish house, only to find he had a Royal tiger shovelnose catfish Merodontotus tigrinus or Brachyplatystoma tigrinum it’s new latin name and an fantastic Green Arrowana in his 7ft display tank.
This is the second time I’ve seen a Merodontotus tigrinus, the first one, was when it was first imported into the UK, and the price tag was well over a 1000 GBP for the fish.

This is an interesting “Ammonia Testing Kit”, it’s called the Ammonia Alert by Seachem. Designed to stay permanently in the water, and the centre indicator changes colour when ammonia levels rise. This is a similiar concept to the Carbon Monoxide detectors which change colour. Changes from yellow (safe) to blue (toxic). It’s designed to last at least 12 months. I purchased this device just under 10 GBP UK Pounds, which is about double what an ammonia testing kit will cost you. Expensive to add one of these to all my tanks! But handy in critical tanks, holding expensive breeding pairs!
I purchase this fish gadget on my travels, I have seen these advertised, as I was contacted by someone trying to sell me this device and I also believe there is a similiar device called the ph Alert.

I’ve been away from my home and fish house, I’ve spent 10 days back in the West Country – Plymouth to be exact. Where the water is soft (ph 6.5-7.0) unlike my local tap water which is hard (you can stand a teaspoon in it!) and ph 8.0 – 8.5. and the vast numbers of tropical fish shops, I spent a day and a half visting them all!
I visited the following Tropical Fish Shops, when visting in and around Plymouth, and excellent stock of fish on display, South American Cichlids and Ls, I just wish I could have taken them all home!

I picked up six new tanks for the fish house this evening, six 30x12x15inch tanks, these will be used for breeding only. Pictures to follow. It’s going to take me a few weeks, to install them in the fish house.

If you’ve come via a bookmark or RSS Newsreader “thru’ the backdoor”, you will not have noticed that I’ve changed the image on the Home Page.
It’s given me an opportunity to try out a new digital camera, the “boss” doesn’t read the blog, so she’ll never know, unless you tell her, and I’ll know!
I’ve still got a Digital SLR, which gives great results, but a decent Canon macro lens and flash is very expensive for such a camera, and you can get good macro fucntions in smaller compact Digital Cameras, you can also get closer to the glass with a compact Digital Cameras – this one was a bargain!
So here’s the first picture I took with the new camera, which is also featured on the home page, if you missed it, here it is again.
Male Ancistrus sp. Bristlenose catfish to most of us fishkeepers, this one is rather special because it doesn’t have the usual colouration as most common, it is almost black with white spots, and it will not breed with any of the common females!

Since, I’ve put all the insulation in the fish house, it’s warming up nicely now at a constant room temperature of 26 degrees C. I’ll need to put an air conditioning unit in there soon, if it becomes too hot.
