Virtualisation Snapshot Hell!

September 9th, 2013

Whatever you call them in VMware circles, they are known as “Snapshots”, in Microsoft circles, Hyper-V they are known as “Checkpoints”.

Snapshots are evil things, I wrote an Article last year on Experts Exchange called – HOW TO: VMware Snapshots :- Be Patient,

the following two clients, clearly had not read my article, but they have now!

VMware vSphere Exchange Virtual Machine with two snapshots, one snapshot size of 250GB, with a parent disk of 500GB

VMware vSphere Exchange Virtual Machine with two snapshots, one snapshot size of 250GB, with a parent disk of 500GB. Exchange performance would have been poor, this snapshot has been present for many months, and eventually took 33 hours to delete, ,merge and commit the snapshot, with 33 hours of Exchange downtime!

Microsoft Hyper-V Virtual Machine

Microsoft Hyper-V Virtual Machine, with 9 nested snapshots, totally 170GB, more of an issue, performance is poor, and deleting these snapshots will cause issues, and delay!

The one thing you need to know about Snapshots, is if you use them, or find a virtual machine using one is Be Patient, if you decide to delete them!!!

or Ask an Expert First!!!!

It can take a very long time, for the process to complete and merge the child (delta) disk into the parent disk.

Pure Gold

Pure Gold – and I’m not referring to the song Gold by Spandau Ballet. I’m referring to my honey.

from a swarm of bees which arrived in June, into one of my hives, I’ve successfully taken off 15kg of honey, which is now filtered, waiting for jarring and labeling.

Here is a quick video of the extracted honey leaving the extractor and being filtered, via coarse and fine mesh filters.

Just some thanks, to Vickie and Andrew (or Andrew and Vickie) for the loan of the extractor, and advice!

Why not visit Vickie’s Website – Wordweaver Stories, and not forgetting Paul @ JLB Electronics.

Broadband Change! Draytek Vigor 2600G versus BT Home Hub 3

August 8th, 2013

As I was passing the “Save the Children” charity shop in Pocklington, at the weekend, I spyed a BT Home Hub 3, Mint, Sealed, New in Box, in he front window, for £5!

bthomehub3-1

bthomehub3-2

bthomehub3-3

Always, after a bargain, I snapped it up for a fiver! If you didn’t know BT Home Hubs supplied by BT are “locked” to their Broadband network, you cannot change the username, but a few minutes later, I had an unlocked version, and can use it to connect to my ISP – Eclipse Internet.

draytek

I’m interested to see, if replacing my aging, Draytek Vigor 2600G router, would I get a better connection speed, and download speed! Here are the test results

So it does not look like my aging Draytek versus BT Home Hub 3, is the cause of my slowness! and looking at these non scientific tests, the Draytek appears to be faster!

Rosa filipes ‘Kiftsgate’ in flower on the Magnolia Tree

July 12th, 2013

Here are some pictures of our rambling rose , Rosa filipes ‘Kiftsgate’ on our Magnolia Tree, enjoying the summer sun. In the last two years, it’s started to go rampant, and produce many flowers, which the bumblebees enjoy. It also has a lovely old rose scent.
