Work goes on …

The classic 70’s children’s TV programme featuring Hector the dog, Zsazsa the cat and their neighbour Kiki the frog.
Well it could be, this is what we call a shed, but it’s a Wendy House for children, it was described as a shed in the fixtures and fittings and left by the previous occupants. We or I find it handy to fit things in that don’t fit in the garage because the fish house is in there!
It’s in a bad state of repair, and if I don’t attend to it quickly, I think it will rot to compost. I think I could have purchased another one for what the wood, roofing felt, and wood preserver has cost me from B and Q!

All the wood that has been painted in “seagrass” is new. The old wood was removed because it had rotted out.

covered-up for the evening, whilst I paint and seal the wood.
Since I’ve been having a few problems with the slugs and snails eating one of my prize Hostas, I thought I’d upload some close-up pictures of them. I’ve always wanted to grow hostas, and now I have a shaddy part of the garden, ideal. I’ve used some sharp grit to mulch the area around the plants, and I’ve boiled-up some garlic cloves in water, and I’ve been spraying the plants and ground to keep the slugs and snails off.

If you click the picture and look at the larger image, you’ll see where the snails/slugs have been eating this plant.
I do have the latin names if interested!
Lindsey weeded this natural cottage garden border under the Holly Tree at the front of the garden. It already has wild garlic, a wild fern and Cuckoo Pints Arum maculatum growing in it, so these were left, but the weeds were thined out.

Plnated with White and Apricot Foxgloves Digitalis purpurea, Hostas and Geraniums.
UPDATE The bloody slugs or snails have started eating my prize hostas! I’m off to get some spent coffee granules tomorrow!
A few blog readers have asked for more pictures of the garden. He are more pictures of the front garden, because we do not have a back garden!

Right of picture is the pear tree in blossom. In the foreground is the Magnolia, flowering has almost come to an end.

We planted 10kgs of daffodills in the lawn in November 2006, so we are waiting for them to die down, before cutting the entire lawn.
I’ve also completed and fixed some code, I’ve been working on for months, so the pictures displayed above are thumbnail versions of the original versions which are also stored on the blog server, they are “clickable”. So if you click the pictures you will see the original images before resizing to fit the blog.
We’ve finally worked out what one of the trees in our front garden is.
It’s a Magnolia Tree!

First snowfall of the year in the village. Struggled to get the car up the hill this morning, followed a Sugar-Beat harvester which helped.
Snow has mostly gone, but what remains has frozen on the hill, creating a skating rink…
This video hosted at www.YouTube.com just contains the short clip When Fireworks Go Wrong!
I’m a lumberjack, and I’m okay.
I sleep all night. I work all day.
I cut down trees. I eat my lunch.
I go to the lavatory.
On Wednesdays I go shoppin’
And have buttered scones for tea.
I cut down trees. I skip and jump.
I like to press wild flowers.
I put on women’s clothing
And hang around in bars.
I cut down trees. I wear high heels,
Suspendies, and a bra.
I wish I’d been a girlie,
Just like my dear Mama (or Papa in later versions)
But only at the weekends! God Bless Monty Python!

I’ve been working out chopping up firewood and kindling for a few hours today, with my new long and short-handled axes.
Very enjoyable, a friend has just had a Rowan tree cut down, and had some spare logs she need to recycle. Another name for Rowan is Mountain Ash. It is said that rowan wood will increase one’s psychic powers, and its branches were often used in dowsing rods and magical wands. Maybe she shouldn’t have had it cut down! Will it make my fire better!

Cut firewood stored to dry in an old coal bunker.

This has been used as the wood shed, it used to be an old outdoor privay, that was purchased by the previous owners from the neighbours. One of few outdoor s**thouses in the UK, that has it’s own Land Registry title! It’s actually quite common, in this area, that neighbours toilets are connected to their neighbours buildings.

Unfortunately, when the extension was built on the house 30 years ago, the neighbours refused to sell it, and hence why only half-an-extension was built on the house.
Scrumping – The act of stealing apples from a cider orchard. (The word comes from Scrumpy cider).
I’ve been eating plums from the plum tree in the garden, I noticed after this afternoons heavy down-pour, that apples and plums were falling off the trees this eve, so tested a few on the tree! Very Nice, I think they are Victoria Plums.
The ceilings downstairs in the lounge and dining rooms are now finished, the skirting boards and window sills are complete and we are now cleaning the house as we move-in later this month.
I’ve been removing the carpet, underlay and carpet grippers on the landing and bathroom, carpet grippers are nasty and one bit me on the finger! Why there’s carpet in the bathroom, nasty!
I’ll take the camera, on my next visit and take some more pictures of the bedrooms upstairs and the kitchen, and must take some pictures of the consumer unit for my Sparky Friend!
