Andy’s “Career” @ExpertsExchange

Wednesday, May 7th, 2014

One the day, that Experts Exchange enters a new era, with a re-brand and overhaul, and a change of logo! I thought it was fitting for a bit of self promotion and Giga-EGO Boost!

It’s also fitting, that in the last two days, I’ve now entered the Top 10 Overall Experts at Experts Exchange in the Hall of Frame,

I’ve been at the Number 11 spot, for many months, and finally jumped two positions to Number 9.

Experts Exchange Hall of Frame

Experts Exchange Hall of Frame

The Hall of Fame, is a little false, because in the top 10, there are only two really active Experts, myself and Ray Paseur, so that makes Ray No.1 and me No.2, so I’m happy with that!

Also, I didn’t blog about it at the time, but last year, I won the following awards

In November I was nominated an MVE in the Gamma Class

Two Days at Lotus F1 Team courtesy of Microsoft & @lotus_f1team @1MikeyT @TechNetUK

Thursday, April 10th, 2014

All work and no play, makes jack a dull boy so I was told when I was a little boy!, I had the opportunity to visit the Lotus F1 Team at Enstone, Oxfordshire for a Microsoft IT Camp on the 8th and 9th April 2014, the days were entitled

Day 1: – Managing the Data Center with Windows Server and Microsoft System Center
Day 2: : Journey to the Cloud with Windows Azure: Microsoft IT Camp

Here are a sample of some photographs I took, there are 141 more here hosted at Google.

Two days, I will remember of a long time, I had an excellent time, and learnt some golden Microsoft nuggets, to take back to the Office, so it was not all about the cars!

Thanks to Guys and Gals at UK Technet, and Michael Taylor @ Lotus F1 Team for two great days.

It’s been a little quite on the blog, because we have just returned from our 25 day journey from Panama to Guatemala in Central America.

We visited

  • Panama Canal – One of the modern wonders of the world
  • Bocas De Toro – Beautiful Caribbean archipelago
  • Monteverde – Cloudforest reserve, home of the Resplendent Quetzal
  • Ometepe Island – Twin volcanic peaks rising from Lake Nicaragua
  • Leon and Granada – Beautiful colonial cities, historically rivals for the title
  • capital of Nicaragua
  • Roatan Island – Spectacular reefs and stunning beaches
  • Copan – Famous Maya ceremonial centre
  • Antigua – One of the finest colonial cities in Central America

Here is a taster, before the photos are uploaded to the album, of lagoons and craters, punctuated with steaming vents and pools of boiling mud (Active Volcano) in Rincon de la Vieja, located close to the Nicaraguan border in the Guanacaste Province, Costa Rica.

The Roundabout, for Andy “The Return to the Mandelbrot sets!”

Thursday, February 20th, 2014

When I first started experimenting with computers in the early 80’s, I was fascinated with the Mandelbrot set, and spent many hours generating it on a BBC Micro, later I added a Second 6502 Processor, I then upgrade to a Master 128k with a Turbo Co-Processor, all in the aid of more compute power! (I search high and low for a Acornsoft GXR rom, to give me more colours, and finally got one from Plymouth Polytechnic Computer Science Department!).

BBC Micro Mandelbrot

This week, I find myself with the following configuration:-

  • (2) nVidia Tesla K40 (currently the most powerful and most expensive graphics processing unit (gpu), used for compute (no video output!).
  • 1 Terra Byte PCI-e Flash Card (SSD but plugs into the motherboard!).

This is a real time, video of calculating Mandelbrot set, using CUDA 5.5 on the 2 nVidia Tesla K40, a little faster than using a BBC Microcomputer!
