Frozen Ballcocks!

Wednesday, December 22nd, 2010

What a morning and afternoon, Lindsey woke me up this morning at silly o’clock, complaining she couldn’t have a shower because there was no cold water!

If you look back in the archives, here, if you examine the photographs carefully and look towards the rear of the photographs, you can see some “loft insulation” that’s been used as lagging around the copper hot and cold water pipes, and also the hot and cold water header tanks.

It would appear that the temperature dropped overnight to something ridiculous which froze the ball cock in the cold water header tank, and also froze one of the pipes.

So, after taking off the cold water feed to the shower unit, and there was no water, putting a 3kWatt fan heater in the attic/loft to warm the loft up, which thawed out the frozen ball cock, eventually combination of fan heater and sun shine on the roof thawed out the pipework.

The only difficulty was connecting the pipe back up, with water coming out of it under pressure from the header tank, and no way to stop it, so I had to let the tank drain, before re-connecting, so I got a bit wet!

So it looks like loft insulation isn’t up to the job of insulating pipes!

That’s another DIY job sometime!

I went to put some office files in a box for over Christmas, and turned my back and guess who’s in the box?

Ice Cold Unbuntu

Monday, December 6th, 2010

I’m not talking about a flavour of Linux but the only Fairtrade cola called Unbuntu.

Unbuntu - The only Fairtrade Cola

Unbuntu - The only Fairtrade Cola

This Christmas why not swap your normal cola for an Unbuntu cola.

The cola is named after the African philosophy of Ubuntu, which means ‘humanity or fellow feeling; kindness‘.

Ubuntu Cola’s sugar is sourced from Fairtrade worker cooperatives in Kasinthula, Malawi and Kaleya, Zambia. Farmers who are members of the Fairtrade cooperative at Kasinthula receive an income of $4 a day, which is six times the national average income.

A few Wintery Pictures from North Yorkshire

Thursday, December 2nd, 2010

We didn’t have much snow last night, so it remains the same at about 2-3 feet in places. But it’s still very cold, and I believe colder tonight.

Yes, these are our Holly Tree’s!

and this is on our Pear Tree!

Lindsey and I went for a walk today, to check how bad the roads were, but it was cut short, when a blizzard arrived and it was bitter cold. Later in the afternoon, I thought it was about time to check the cars over, and remove the 2 feet worth of snow which has covered them for over a week and start them up, but it wasn’t such a good idea, there was not enough space on the driveway for all the snow I’d brushed off the cars, and when trying to move my car out into the road, I got stuck in the snow, moving it back onto the drive and had to dig the snow off the driver to get my car back on, as the car was sliding and wheels were spinning!

anyway here are some nice Wintery Pictures from North Yorkshire … Keep warm..

Still snowing…

Wednesday, December 1st, 2010

It’s still snowing here, the snow falls hit the North East of the UK again last night, and it snowed non-stop this morning for four hours from 8am – 12 noon (I watched it!).

It’s still snowing now, and we’ve got about 2 feet of snow in the garden now. I’ll get some snowy pictures tomorrow.

The roads must be bad because we didn’t see the Postman today! I’m glad I’ve booked my Online Shopping delivery for Christmas Day! (it could be weeks before we drive the cars again).

Angus – coming in from the cold

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

Still snow here in North Yorkshire, although what was forecast last night didn’t appear, or it was rather mild because of the snow clouds, but tonight the forecast is -10 degrees C, so very cold and more snow.

When Angus wants to come in to the house, he knocks on the window now.

iPad iOS 4.2.1 Folders

Monday, November 29th, 2010

Now I’ve upgraded my iPad to iOS 4.2.1 I can take advantage of folders to organise/categorise Apps downloaded from the AppStore.

iPad iOS 3.2.1 No Folders

iPad iOS 3.2.1 No Folders

Now my iPad has only two pages with folders to organize the Apps, rather than nine pages of icons (apps) as before with iOS 3.2.1.

It does take some time to create the folders and organise the apps, and for some strange reason, it’s quicker to do it on the iPad, than with iTunes!

Snow in November 2010

Sunday, November 28th, 2010

Snow has certainly come early this year to the Hamlet.

It started snowing on Wednesday 24th November 2010 and its not stopped, it’s a good job that the groceries were delivered today! It’s not looking likely that the snow will stop before the end of the week. So the car’s going no-where.

Here’s a little video clip of the snow covered garden. (Available in HD also!)

The birds in the background have not been added to the video track, thats the number of birds feeding in the garden, if you look towards the end of the garden. Don’t forget to feed the birds this winter!

Jailbroken iPad iOS 3.2.1 to iOS 4.2.1

JailbreakMe greeting

JailbreakMe greeting

Since Jailbreaking my iPad a few weeks ago, so I could run Adobe Flash in the Safari browser, I’ve noticed an element of instability with the device, these are the dangers of messing with the code!

Oops .. not for the faint hearted this one!

Personally, I don’t visit alot of flash based websites, and I’m not really interested in the flash based adverts, so now that iOS 4.2.1 has been launched for the iPad on the 23 November 2010, and folders is one thing I really need to reduce the Pages and organise my 134 Apps, time to upgrade (just remember to save your (shsh blobs first, if you want to rollback to a previous iPad firmware version, before Upgrading your iPAD – use Tiny Umbrella here).
