A Fish House Could Seriously Damage your Health!

Monday, May 22nd, 2006

A few weeks ago whilst carrying out regular daily maintenance in the fish house, I heard a “crackling sound”, at first this sounded like running water, I then smelt burning and noticed thick smoke from the terminal (chocolate) block in the following photograph. I quickly shutdown all electricity in the fish house. To investigate the problem further.

Melted Terminal Block

This 15Amp terminal block was used to connect a 500Watt (approx 2-3Amp) heater to an external thermostat. As you can see from the photograph, it’s been completely destroyed, melted and fused.

On further investigation I found that the solder used to “tin” the wires had degraded, causing a gap between the electrical contacts in the terminal block and wire. This gap caused an electrical arc, hence the crackling sound, the heat caused by this electrical arc was responsible for melting the terminal block. This heater is thermotstatically controlled, so the heater is only on for very short periods.

I understand that the practice of “tinning wires” in electrical appliances is no longer performed for this very reason, solder breaks down with age, exposure to air (oxidation) and can cause fires. Wires in electrical appliances are now terminated using bootlace ferules.

Tinned copper wires and wires terminated with insulated bootlace ferrules.

I’ve now started to remove all tinned wires using solder and replace with insulated bootlace ferrules. in the fish house.

Animal House Buyers Guide

Whoops..and thats…

Friday, January 20th, 2006

..another water experiment that’s gone Pete Tong!

I’ve been trying to sex the hundreds of Bristlenose catfish Ancistrus sp. I have in the fish house, some have now matured, but I seem to have females, and no males, Males can usually be indentified as they have bristles on their noses and cheeks, but some species of Ancistrus both males and females can have bristle on their noses. I would have expected to see bristles by now.

While I was doing this, I overfilled a water butt in the fish house! I need to find a mop….quickly….

Sorry, no posts this week, I’ve been pulling the late shift again in the office, so apart from feeding the fish in the fish house, I’ve not been doing anything interesting to report on.

The large mature Angelfish with “pop-eye” is getting worse, I’ve been looking at photographs I’ve been taking every few days, and the condition is worse that at the begininning of the week.

I will remove this fish from the display tank tomorrow, and re-house in a small quarantine tank, it is possible that the Polyfilter has removed the MelaFix from the aquarium, as it removes organics. It’s much easier to treat a fish in a smaller aquarium and requires less MelaFix.

Pop-Eye

Friday, January 13th, 2006

I have noticed that one of my very old large Marble Angel fish may have developed Pop-Eye. Not to be confused with the Sailor!

Pop Eye

I do not breed from this angel fish any more, this female is too old, and lives in my display tank in the house.

Pop-eye is caused by: bacterial infection, parasite infestation, metabolic disorders, and poor water quality.

Symptoms: one or both eyes swell and project from the head. In severe cases, the eye can burst from the socket.

Treatment/Control: affected fish can be treated with MelaFix.

Large Old Angel fish

The water quality in the aquarium checks out okay, I’ll maintain a close “eye” on her condition. Excuse the pun!

Anyone for Endlers?

Tuesday, January 10th, 2006

Snails and Endlers are breeding out of control, I need to replace a few items, the fluorescent tube above my 6x2x2 tanks has started to fail, and I need to purchase some replacement combined heater thermostats or heaters for my tank in the house, a slim-line Algarde heater failed before I went away for the new year, so a temporay fix is currently in place, using Armitage heaters.

Electricity Update

Saturday, January 7th, 2006

I’ve been analysing all the electricity used in the fish house, with the use of my Power Meters, and I can reveal I use an Average of 70kWh a day!

Hence I’ve recently switched suppliers in November 2005, and gain to make a saving of over 800 pound per annum.

Mange-Tout

Tuesday, January 3rd, 2006

or Sugar Snap Peas, what have these got to do with Andysworld you may ask?

Drain pipe 1

I use to grow Mange-Tout aka Sugar Snap Peas in sections of drain pipe for easy relocation to the vegetable plot, I’ve now re-used them in the garage outside of the “fish house” to catch the condensation falling from the internal garage roof, I had more water on the floor, than in the fish tanks a few weeks ago. I don’t think a dehumidifier would work because the temperature is too low, and I’ve got a approx 2,500l of of heated water in the fish house which evaporates!

Drain pipe 2

So I’ve rigged up a some guttering to catch the water, and drips by gravity into a bucket, it’s certainly much drier in the garage!

Hagen BioLife 55 regular maintenance

Thursday, December 29th, 2005

I’ve noticed recently that a Hagen BioLife 55, I’m using on my L190 & L001 aquarium in the fish house, has been pulse-ing on and off. I though it was a worn impellar, so I put it on my “todo” list to purchase a new one next year, it started to get worse, so I checked it over and it looked okay, and seem to work okay when removed from the filter body.

Ah, found the problem, if the filter media gets clogged, it stops the flow of water and the impellar stops! TIPCheck the Hagen BioLife filter media regularly. I will do from now on.

Fourth batch of Sturisoma Aureum Fry start to hatch

Wednesday, December 28th, 2005

There’s about 6-8 inches of snow on the ground, and the fourth batch of Sturisoma Aureum Fry start to hatch. We had a slight dusting of snow on yesterday, but it snowed through the night, and has been cold all day, and hasn’t melted yet.

The fish house is quite toasty at 25 degrees C.
