Happy Halloween 2015

Saturday, October 31st, 2015

In an Andysworld yearly tradition, Happy Halloween, and Welcome To The Great Pumpkin Massacre of 2015. I’ve been growing my large Atlantic pumpkin this year, which weighed just short of 10kg, I’m afraid I lost to my work colleague, who’s pumpkin weighed in at 17kg! So freshly picked from the allotment this morning, and slaughtered and carved this evening!

It has been rubbish weather this year for growing pumpkins, and very few fruits, set correctly, this was the only one, early in the year.

Summer’s End

Friday, September 18th, 2015

At Summer’s End, as the Autumnal Equinox approaches (23 September 2015), the butterflies grab a last nectar bite, before the Buddleia Davidii stops flowering, when the day is warm, and the sun is out. Here are a few snaps I took with my age-ing (2013) Google Nexus 4 running Android 5.x something, unedited, not tampered with, straight off the phone, just shrunk an reduced in size. (as I’m often asked, what digital SLR, and macro lens did I use – Answer NONE!)

You can see by the tatty wings on these butterflies, these are old butterflies….

Partial Eclipse of the Sun on the top of Arras Hill (Weighton Wold)

Friday, March 20th, 2015

On the way to work, this morning, I took some pictures on the top of Arras Hill (Weighton Wold), 146 metres above sea level, at the triangulation point at Grid SE 91077 41626.

It got very cold, as the sun disappeared behind the moon.

Snow in the "Shire"!

Snow in the "Shire"!

Second time this year, that it’s snowed. so went down to the apiary, to check on the bees, and took some photos in the glorious sunshine.

The colonies were treated by vaporising with oxalic acid crystals, one week ago, to reduce the levels of phoretic varroa destructor mites, which at this time of year are actually living on the honey bees (Apis mellifera), because my colonies are broodless at present.

The varroa destructor mite was introduced into the UK, in 1992, honey bees (Apis mellifera) have no natural defence to it, and we need to check regularly, as part of our integrated pest management, to ensure the levels are kept low, it cannot be completely eradicated (yet!), over populations of varroa destructor, can lead to colony collapse, it’s also a vector for disease and viruses in  honey bees (Apis mellifera). Varroa destructor reproduce by female mite enters the brood cell, with bee larva, just before the cell is capped, and lays her eggs on the bee larva, when the cell is uncapped, out come the young mites. So, no brood, no larva, all the mites on on the bees, so an easy target to treat, hence why we treat in broodless periods, between November – February.

How do we know, they have mites, we use a sticky inspection board, inserted into the bottom of the hive, the mites drop off the bees, and stick on the board, and then we count them! (yes they can easily be seen with the naked eye!).

and I added 2.5kg of ambrosia fondant to each hive. (An insurance policy, to prevent them starving – to help feed them during the winter period), and they are securely lashed down, using hive straps.

Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year, No cards this year, Money donated to WaterAid!

Monday, December 1st, 2014

I’ve been struggling with a dilemma for many years, on the distribution and needless spend on Christmas Cards at Christmas time each year, this also fueled by the increase costs in posting a Christmas card in the UK,  currently –  (1st Class letter stamp is 62p, and a 2nd Class letter stamp is 53p), I’ll not be adding to Royal Mail’s Profits this year!

After visiting many countries including Africa, Ethiopia, Nicaragua and India, where people in the world don’t have access to safe water. I’ve now made my decision.

This year, I will NOT be sending out Christmas Cards, and the money normally spent on cards and postage is being donated to Water Aid.

Please do not be offended if you do not receive a Christmas Card, but be joyous in the thanks, that the money has gone to provide safe drinking water to those in need, this Christmas!

Here is a virtual one instead….

and let me takes this opportunity to Wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, from Andy, Lindsey, Esther, Angus and Tilly!

thanks

Popped to Church for Remembrance Sunday!

Sunday, November 10th, 2013

I quickly popped to Church today, for Remembrance Sunday and also to place these “trackables” in the Geocache!

This place “Kirby Underdale” sounds like it’s from Tolkien’s Lord Of The Rings
