Monitoring of Temperartures of Tanks in Fish House

This is probably going to bore the pants of most of you, but it’s information for me really. I’ve been wanting to monitor real-time temperatures of ALL tanks in the fish house for a while, so this is just a test, these tanks are under contiuous monitoring at present, linked to Internet, by uploading real-time charts, emailing me real-time data every minute and also Alerting me by Text Message to my Mobile Phone or Fixed Landline.

Temperature (as are other water parameters) is critical to tropical fish, under temperature of over temperature if a heater should fail. I can also monitor pH, redox potential, conductivity, water levels, oxygen content and air pressure, if I wish using different probes.

Frozen Ballcocks!

What a morning and afternoon, Lindsey woke me up this morning at silly o’clock, complaining she couldn’t have a shower because there was no cold water!

If you look back in the archives, here, if you examine the photographs carefully and look towards the rear of the photographs, you can see some “loft insulation” that’s been used as lagging around the copper hot and cold water pipes, and also the hot and cold water header tanks.

It would appear that the temperature dropped overnight to something ridiculous which froze the ball cock in the cold water header tank, and also froze one of the pipes.

So, after taking off the cold water feed to the shower unit, and there was no water, putting a 3kWatt fan heater in the attic/loft to warm the loft up, which thawed out the frozen ball cock, eventually combination of fan heater and sun shine on the roof thawed out the pipework.

The only difficulty was connecting the pipe back up, with water coming out of it under pressure from the header tank, and no way to stop it, so I had to let the tank drain, before re-connecting, so I got a bit wet!

So it looks like loft insulation isn’t up to the job of insulating pipes!

That’s another DIY job sometime!

I’m not talking about a flavour of Linux but the only Fairtrade cola called Unbuntu.

Ubuntu Cola’s sugar is sourced from Fairtrade worker cooperatives in Kasinthula, Malawi and Kaleya, Zambia. Farmers who are members of the Fairtrade cooperative at Kasinthula receive an income of $4 a day, which is six times the national average income.

A few Wintery Pictures from North Yorkshire

We didn’t have much snow last night, so it remains the same at about 2-3 feet in places. But it’s still very cold, and I believe colder tonight.

Lindsey and I went for a walk today, to check how bad the roads were, but it was cut short, when a blizzard arrived and it was bitter cold. Later in the afternoon, I thought it was about time to check the cars over, and remove the 2 feet worth of snow which has covered them for over a week and start them up, but it wasn’t such a good idea, there was not enough space on the driveway for all the snow I’d brushed off the cars, and when trying to move my car out into the road, I got stuck in the snow, moving it back onto the drive and had to dig the snow off the driver to get my car back on, as the car was sliding and wheels were spinning!
