The muts nuts of Access Points – The Ubiquiti Networks UAP-AC-PRO @ubnt

Friday, January 27th, 2017

Very impressive hardware, with lots of features, and statistics, logging….Good Radios, for 2.4GHz and 5GHz. Setup is straightfoward, and if you know what you are doing for shits and giggles, you can hit the Advanced Button!

The UniFi Controller software can be linked to the Cloud, so you can spy on your installation from remote Web browser or Smartphone application, available for Droid and iThingy.

UniFi Overview

UniFi Overview

An excellent feature shows WiFi devices MAC and IP Address, but also looks up the manufacturer, and also shows device signal quality, and data transmitted and received, I’m now puzzling why my Chromecast and Amazon Firestick are so chatty!

Here are some screenshots from the Droid app

So 16 hours into testing, and I’ve connected a total of 24 devices concurrently, and transferred a massive 23.1GB of traffic across the WiFi network (single access point). All other WiFi devices are turned off now,  no router WiFi or other access points, I’m still using the TP-Link router, at present because my Signal to Noise ratio on the Broadband Line has been reset to 6dB again!

That’s another story…..

Catch you later folk.

Too many WiFi devices and used up all my WiFi beans in my Broadband routers!

Monday, January 16th, 2017

Well the title says it all, with the addition of more WiFi Home Automation devices, it would appear I’ve used up all the WiFi beans in my Broadband Routers, or they easily get overloaded with too many devices. I’ve just added another 12 WiFi devices, and it would appear that’s overkill for a 2Wire 2700HGV and backup BT Home Hub 3 broadband routers.

2Wire 2700HGV & BT Home Hub 3

2Wire 2700HGV & BT Home Hub 3

I’ve been meaning to overall my WiFi for a while, so turned off a dedicated 2.4GHz  and 5GHz access points, and replaced with a single inexpensive broadband dual band 2.4GHz and 5GHz router from TP-LINK Archer D20 AC750 Wireless Dual Band ADSL2+ Modem Router for Phone Line Connections, those devices that have 5GHz have been migrated to the 5GHz WiFi, e.g. Amazon Echo, Nexus, laptops & iPads.

TP-LINK Archer D20 AC750 Wireless Dual Band ADSL2+ Modem Router for Phone Line Connections

TP-LINK Archer D20 AC750 Wireless Dual Band ADSL2+ Modem Router for Phone Line Connections

It does not look very pretty, and has the standard, LEDs for Power On, 2.4GHz/5.0GHz Enabled, ADSL Connection, Internet Connected and LAN states, this router, is on the top of a shelf, so I need to standard on a stool to check the LED status, it would have been handy, if they were visible… (ignore the whitebox in the above picture, that’s the SamKnows UK Broadband Availability monitoring box)

I’ve now got a few devices from TP-Link, a Chinese company, and the products are of good quality and inexpensive. I’ve got TP-Link  battery  power banks, and recent WiFi smart switches, all with a 3 Year Guarantee, and 24/7 Technical Support! and if you are a real Techie Nerd, you can visit the TP-Link website, and checkout the GUI Management Interface of their products, using their TP-Link emulator

TP-Link router interface

and for shits and giggles, it has SNMP (for a budget router a bargain), you can graph traffic….

SNMP monitoring of TP-Link router

So all in all, Good value router, with 3 year guarantee, we will see if it struggles with the WiFi!

Update :- It made no difference, the end result, the WiFi radios in routers cannot cope and struggle with too many WiFi devices, in my case 30, which in the future more and more households, we will start to see the same issue….as more households embrace WiFi, how many WiFi devices are you currently using ?

So I purchased one of these – The WiFi Cure! – Ubiquiti Networks UAP-AC-PRO

Synology NAS and SSD Cache Part II – Is cache better for Plex Media Server ?

Sunday, April 10th, 2016

In my recent article comparing the performance of the addition of a Read and Write SSD Cache to a volume on a Synology NAS, I started to look in detail at whether this cache benefits any other services on a Synology NAS running DSM 5.2.

In this experiment I’m looking at the Plex Media Server, and I’ve setup two identical Synology NAS, running DSM 5.2 Build 5644 Update 5, both with Plex Media Server 0.9.15.2.1663, both are streaming the same 1080P Blue Ray movie to the same Plex client via WiFi, at the same time. The first NAS has no cache, the second NAS has 120GB of read and write cache, and these are the results.

The second NAS with the read and write cache enabled shows, lower Disk Utilization 1% compared to 5%.

Again you can see here, 6% (no cache), 1% (cache)

The same stats from both NAS, No cache and cache enabled, what is interesting is the CPU load results are lower on the cache enabled version!

I have a 2GB SD and 4GB SDHC Eye-Fi wireless memory card, if you have a digital camera (and don’t most people today?), and it takes SD, then why haven’t you got one. Transfers digital pictures off the camera automatically to your Laptop, iPad or can upload directly to the internet.

Must be the best Gadget ever!

UK E585 SP01 Firmware Unlock Success

“Very many thanks indeed for all your help. I am actually sending this via the MiFi (although it’s a bit slower than my broadband connection). Despite the complications arising from the new firmware version you solved all the problems and I am very happy indeed, especially in the knowledge that the firmware is intact. Feel free to quote me.

All the very best – and wishing you a happy and prosperous New Year”

andysworld! Blog: Huawei E585 Unlock download!

Saturday, November 13th, 2010

iPad Gadget of the Year – Huawei E585 – also called MiFi device.

The Huawei E585 MiFi Moble WiFi Wireless 3G Modem is currently exclusively only available on the Three network and it’s SIM-locked to this network, if you insert another SIM from another provider O2, Voda UK, Orange or T-Mobile you’ll receive an “Insert SIM”, “Bad Sim”, “Sim Lock”, “Invalid SIM” or similiar error. If you would like to use this fanastic 3G Wireless Router on another network you’ll need to remove the SIM-LOCK. This is where you need to be very careful, there are various different ways of removing the SIM-LOCK, the correct way and the wrong way, some hacks have re-written the firmware, the result removes the SIM-LOCK, but leaves you with a E585 modem with modified firmware, and you’ll not be able to change the firmware in the future.

This method reveals the true SIMLOCK code, and then you enter this SIMLOCK code into the E585 via the web interface.

Huawei 585 Hidden Unlock Menu

Huawei 585 Hidden Unlock Menu

The method is very simple

  1. Insert SIM card from another network.
  2. Turn on MiFi (E585) Invalid SIM will be displayed.
  3. Connect MiFi (E585) to computer.
  4. Read and download flash contents from MiFi (E585).
  5. Unlock code is hidden in flash contents.
  6. Enter Unlock code in hidden menu.
  7. UNLOCKED.
  8. For details on unlocking and software please make a 10 GBP donation via PayPal.
  9. and by return I’ll send you the PDF document and software to unlock your E585.
  10. The donation pays for the hosting of this website, and thousands of hits and free information I’ve provided on unlocking Three Mobile Modems.
