Two pairs of Angelfish spawn

Thursday, December 29th, 2005

One pair of angelfish have spawned, and I’ve discovered another pair with 1-2 day old wrigglers! Missed that pair, I blame that on too much wine on Christmas Day!

Hagen BioLife 55 regular maintenance

Thursday, December 29th, 2005

I’ve noticed recently that a Hagen BioLife 55, I’m using on my L190 & L001 aquarium in the fish house, has been pulse-ing on and off. I though it was a worn impellar, so I put it on my “todo” list to purchase a new one next year, it started to get worse, so I checked it over and it looked okay, and seem to work okay when removed from the filter body.

Ah, found the problem, if the filter media gets clogged, it stops the flow of water and the impellar stops! TIPCheck the Hagen BioLife filter media regularly. I will do from now on.

Fourth batch of Sturisoma Aureum Fry start to hatch

Wednesday, December 28th, 2005

There’s about 6-8 inches of snow on the ground, and the fourth batch of Sturisoma Aureum Fry start to hatch. We had a slight dusting of snow on yesterday, but it snowed through the night, and has been cold all day, and hasn’t melted yet.

The fish house is quite toasty at 25 degrees C.

Lack of Photographs Digital SLR

Saturday, December 24th, 2005

You may have noticed better quality photographs posted this month in December 2005, at the end of November, my Leica Digilux failed to read the memory cards, and needs to go back to Germany to be repaired. At the beginning of December I decided to purchase a Canon EOS Digital SLR for my partner & I as our Christmas present from Father Christmas. So the pictures you have seen since December 2, have been taken with this camera. I didn’t want to spoil the surprise, so I’ve not posted the details before, just in case one of her friends, tipped her off, that reads these posts.

The lack of photographs posted recently is because it’s wrapped under the Christmas Tree waiting to be opened tomorrow, when I can carry on using it again.

Another twenty young Sturisoma Aureum catfish

Friday, December 23rd, 2005

I’ve moved another twenty young Sturisoma Aureum catfish into my 48x12x12 growing on tank. I’ve still got plenty of catfish to catch and move, but it’s taking a while to catch them all. I’m still feeding them on spinach, spirulina cubes and Sera catfish chips.

Thursday, December 22nd, 2005

I’ve been desperatly moving all the young Sturisoma Aureum to another large growing-on tank, as the breeding tank is a little bit over-crowed, and I noticed this evening that the parents are spawning again.

L190 and Altum Angelfish

Tuesday, December 20th, 2005

I visited Maidenhead Aquatics today in York, in my lunchtime, I needed to purchase an aquarium thermometer and some bogwood for the new growing-on tank for the young Sturisoma Aureum.

At the time of visiting they had four Altum Angelfish at 25 GBP each, a good size and quality, they also had many L190 at a few inches at 15 GBP.

Algae starts to grow

Monday, December 19th, 2005

Algae has started to grow on the new growing-on tank for the Sturisoma Aureum catfish, so the Power-Glo tube is working correctly this should help their feeding requirements.

Snails are also getting out of control in one of the aquariums, I knew it was a mistake to leave that single snail!
