TiVo UK Service Ends or Does it?

Friday, June 24th, 2011

I blogged here in February, that TiVo had announced the termination of UK service. Since the 1st June 2011, we’ve been limping along waiting for service to end. Today everyone’s TiVo at next “dial-home” will receive the following message, and any guide data will no longer be available.

TiVo Service Ends - 24 June 2011

TiVo Service Ends - 24 June 2011

Well Mr TiVo if you are reading this you can feck off. Mr Virgin has told you some porkies about the coverage of fecking Virgin TV in the UK.

You cannot take our TiVos back, and I’ll switch to AltEpg!

Yes, that’s right folks TiVo UK is back using a FREE, Alternative EPG Project!

“Introduction

On June 1st 2011, TiVo Inc. (USA) ceased the original TiVo service in the UK.
This means the original Tivo series one units will no longer receive any electronic programme guide (EPG) data and thus render many of their functions like Season Passes, Wishlists etc. in-operable.

The Alternative EPG Project (AltEPG) was born to independently source and provide replacement guide data as a substitute service, thus enabling users with perfectly good TiVo hardware to continue using their DVR’s.

This replacement guide data service is sourced from internet based content, maintained and improved via crowd sourcing. This means the quality of the guide data is in our (the users) hands.”

So if you want to keep the Best PVR in the World, switch to AltEpg.

(and although it is free, I’m sure AltEpg wouldn’t mine a donation!)

Bye Bye TiVo after 1 June 2011

Wednesday, February 16th, 2011

I have four Series1 TiVos, one was purchased early 2000, the second one a few years later, followed by another two. Two are production (they are two important to alter, because they have a job to do!), and two are research and developement.

if you’ve never seen what a TiVo looks like, it’s a metal silver/gold box, these are pictures of my four, not very interesting, just boxes

On the 4th Feb 2011, this was the first message we received from the TiVo Team.

From:    The TiVo Team
Date:    Fri 4th Feb 2011
Expire:    Fri 18th Feb 2011

If you are on the cable footprint, you can get Virgin Media’s top TV package and a brand new TiVo box at a very special price. Find out about more and be one of the first to get this offer at virginmedia.com/tivoupgrade.

It would seem that TiVo had struck a deal with Virgin Media to offer new TiVo boxes at very special prices to existing TiVo customers, that’s okay if you live in a cable footprint area, but of no value if you don’t live in a cable footprint area.

On Valentine’s Day we had another special message from TiVo HQ.

TiVo Service Ends - 1 June 2011

TiVo Service Ends - 1 June 2011

Subject:    Free Service Continues until 1 June 2011
From:    The TiVo Team
Date:    Mon 14th Feb 2011
Expire:    Mon 28th Feb 2011

On 1 June 2011, TiVo will be discontinuing the service for Series1 TiVo Recorders in the UK. Your current service will continue to be provided until that time at no charge. For further information, go to tivo.com/UKSeries1.

So that’s it, TiVo US have dumped us, and from the 1st June 2011, these silver/gold boxes will become door steps after 11 years of use, and still the BEST ever PVR on the market.

The reason for this blog, so UK Series 1 TiVo users can continue to receive service after 1 June 2011, and continue using our beloved TiVos, a group of us from the TiVo Community have banded together to try and replace the service. We our gathering at TiVoland.com.

We will need resources, TiVo testers, and if you have a TiVo which you can loan or donate to the effort, it will be returned once the new service is up and running. Contact me or head over to the forums and register.

If you are also interested in receving details of the new service in the future, also contact me.

Gremlins

Monday, April 19th, 2010

I’ve been suffering a spate of Gremlin attacks…

  1. One of my TiVo’s stopped working.
  2. Alba Freeview Set Top Box wouldn’t turn on.
  3. Two hard disks failed in my production workstation.
  4. One hard disk failed in my NAS.
  5. Engine management on the car, is having an “off” day!

I’ve repaired the TiVo, it needed a new power supply, the Alba STB went in the bin, and I’ve ordered new hard disks for my workstation and NAS.

Ghosts in the machine!

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009

ah, the reason no data is being shown is my wattson has crashed and hung. It will be a few days, until it gets over it’s illnes! It has done this before in the last 510 days I’ve been logging data. I don’t know what’s going on here, my TiVo crashed again, my phone reset and crashed, I’m still trying to get my PC working, and Wattson’s poorly!

Almost five days and no posts, not a good start to 2006!

Sorry for no posts in the last couple of days, I’m trying to repair my Father’s TiVo!

It’s taking longer that I thought!

Endlers are breeding out of control, there are hundreds of fry in the tank at present.

Sturisoma Aureum catfish are enjoying the free algae that’s growing in the growing-on tank.
