Final Harvest of potatoes

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

As the local farmers lift the potatoes before the frosts from the fields, I thought it was about time to lift all my potatoes, I’ve had a good crop of Anya, Edzell Blue and Lady Balfour this year, the first earlies Epicure, weren’t very good, so I’ll be dropping them from my grow list next year. I’ve had bumper crops from Anya, so I think I’ll be growing more of this salad variety next year. The potatoes have certainly done better than the tomatotes! Here are some pictures of the final harvest this year drying on the rotten porch in the sun.

Potatoe Harvest Time

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

I’ve harvested the last of the First Earlies I planted out in March this year and dug up the last plant, it revealed much better potatoes, the variety I grew was Epicure. But I don’t think I’ll be selecting this variety next year.

But the Second Earlies Edzell Blue I also planted out in March, have done extremely well, and I thought the tubers, when planted were all shrivelled up and rubbish when I planted them out. It just goes to show, looks can be deceptive.

Potatoe Farm update – ready?

Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009

An update on how the potatoes are growing. I’ve been reminded by the calendar it’s time to dig-up my First Earlies – Epicure, which should be ready for harvesting now.

Potatoe Farm update – Earthing-up

Saturday, May 9th, 2009
My potatoe farm has been romping away, I’m surprised that all the 48 tubers from Unwins have sprouted, except one, despite them looking rubbish before they were planted. Time to earth them up again…(I’ve also heard on the weather forecast, we are getting a frost tonight, so want to protect the delicate chutes).

Potatoes in exhibitor bags

Sunday, April 5th, 2009

I’ve now planted all my potatoes , first and second earliers, salad and main crop in exhibitor bags. Not having an allotment or space to put a row of potatoes in (unless I did up the lawn, now there’s an idea, wouldn’t need cutting then!), exhibitor bags will have to do for the moment.
