TiVo UK Service Ends or Does it?

Friday, June 24th, 2011

I blogged here in February, that TiVo had announced the termination of UK service. Since the 1st June 2011, we’ve been limping along waiting for service to end. Today everyone’s TiVo at next “dial-home” will receive the following message, and any guide data will no longer be available.

TiVo Service Ends - 24 June 2011

TiVo Service Ends - 24 June 2011

Well Mr TiVo if you are reading this you can feck off. Mr Virgin has told you some porkies about the coverage of fecking Virgin TV in the UK.

You cannot take our TiVos back, and I’ll switch to AltEpg!

Yes, that’s right folks TiVo UK is back using a FREE, Alternative EPG Project!

On June 1st 2011, TiVo Inc. (USA) ceased the original TiVo service in the UK.
This means the original Tivo series one units will no longer receive any electronic programme guide (EPG) data and thus render many of their functions like Season Passes, Wishlists etc. in-operable.

The Alternative EPG Project (AltEPG) was born to independently source and provide replacement guide data as a substitute service, thus enabling users with perfectly good TiVo hardware to continue using their DVR’s.

This replacement guide data service is sourced from internet based content, maintained and improved via crowd sourcing. This means the quality of the guide data is in our (the users) hands.”

So if you want to keep the Best PVR in the World, switch to AltEpg.

(and although it is free, I’m sure AltEpg wouldn’t mine a donation!)

Bye Bye TiVo after 1 June 2011

Wednesday, February 16th, 2011

I have four Series1 TiVos, one was purchased early 2000, the second one a few years later, followed by another two. Two are production (they are two important to alter, because they have a job to do!), and two are research and developement.

if you’ve never seen what a TiVo looks like, it’s a metal silver/gold box, these are pictures of my four, not very interesting, just boxes

On the 4th Feb 2011, this was the first message we received from the TiVo Team.

From:    The TiVo Team
Date:    Fri 4th Feb 2011
Expire:    Fri 18th Feb 2011

If you are on the cable footprint, you can get Virgin Media’s top TV package and a brand new TiVo box at a very special price. Find out about more and be one of the first to get this offer at

It would seem that TiVo had struck a deal with Virgin Media to offer new TiVo boxes at very special prices to existing TiVo customers, that’s okay if you live in a cable footprint area, but of no value if you don’t live in a cable footprint area.

On Valentine’s Day we had another special message from TiVo HQ.

TiVo Service Ends - 1 June 2011

The reason for this blog, so UK Series 1 TiVo users can continue to receive service after 1 June 2011, and continue using our beloved TiVos, a group of us from the TiVo Community have banded together to try and replace the service. We our gathering at

Getting On - Comedy on BBC Four

Getting On - Comedy on BBC Four

It’s back for a Second Series, I’ve not laughed so much at a BBC Comedy.

Getting On is a satirical British sitcom based in a present day NHS hospital. It is largely ad-libbed by its cast, who also wrote the series. Jo Brand is one of the writers and actors.

“It’s my perception of the NHS today”, I’m sorry to say, after having first hand experieince of the NHS over the past two years!

Watch it on BBC Four or BBC iPlayer.

Willies Delectable Cacao - very good!

Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009

The final challenge on this weeks BBC’s The Apprentice, to be screened on Sunday 9pm BBC One, is to launch a new box of chocolates. Which has prompted me to rescue a draft post, I produced a few weeks ago, but never got around to publish it. Handmade by Willie Harcourt-Cooze from his factory in Devon, this new dark “chocolatecacao, is dark chocolate without the bitter or sweet taste. Its called Willies Delectable Cacao. If you like proper chocolate (and I don’t mean Mars bars, KitKats or Snickers!) e.g. Lindt, Green and Blacks - you’ll love this, it’s very good. It’s 80g, and you get two bars, individually wrapped in gold foil, I would show you what it looks like, but I’ve eaten it already! But this is the packaging to look for in the Supermarkets.

Its’ now readily available from Waitrose. Now where is Willerby?

(thanks to Sally & Paul for supplying me with a sample! - cannot wait for more!!!)

R.I.P - BBC iPlayer Download Manager

Sunday, April 26th, 2009

I’ve seen the BBC have replaced BBC iPlayer Download Manager with BBC iPlayer Desktop which uses Adobe AIR and Flex technologies which will make use of Flash Media Rights Management Server (FMRMS) to DRM-protect content which is downloaded to the user’s desktop. I wonder if they’ve changed this because they were fed-up of people stripping out the DRM with Windows tools. I suppose Mac and Linux users will now be happy, that BBC iPlayer content is available to them, and folks that never liked the peer-to-peer Kontiki software can be removed - I think Sky and Channel 4 4oD service still need this technology.

The BBC still allow you to download Windows Media Player content at present, with DRM! (direct download from website only - not peer to peer)
